Flute Lessons
Thomas is a graduate from the University of British Columbia with a Masters in Music. He previously received his certificate in Flute Pedagogy and Literature from the Victoria Conservatory of Music. His primary mentors are Christie Reside and Mary Byrne. He has been a recipient of performance scholarships and academic grants from the BC Arts Council, BC Provincials Festival, University of British Columbia, Victoria Conservatory of Music and Capilano University.
Thomas has participated in many international summer festivals including: Orford Musique, Marina Piccinini International Masterclasses and Pender Island Flute Retreat.
He is grateful to have been able to learn from: Marina Piccinini, Lorna McGhee, Paula Robison, William Bennett and Susan Hoeppner.
With the flute (and piccolo!) in hand, Thomas freelances in Vancouver and is thrilled to juggle between solo, chamber and orchestral engagements. He is seen performing recitals with his flute-piano duo and his flute-guitar duo. Orchestrally, Thomas has performed with Symphony 21, Singers & Players, Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra, Kamloops Symphony and Victoria Symphony among others.
As a passionate teacher, Thomas teaches students of all ages (7-85+!), proving that it is never too late to pick up an instrument. He teaches first lesson beginners all the way to university preparation and everything in between. He is experienced in preparing students for RCM exams, competitions, concerts and band/orchestra auditions with successful students entering honour bands and university programs.
Thomas often coaches clinics (which he has dubbed “Thomas’ Tiny Tips”) in schools and community groups in Vancouver and previously, Victoria. He formerly taught at St. James Music Academy, and was a post secondary teaching artist in association with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Connects program, bringing music education and awareness to elementary and high schools.
Thomas’ teaching focuses on helping students become independent, inquisitive and joyous learners while equipping them with the practical tools to facilitate musical and technical obstacles.
