Certainly, one of the most popular instruments to learn to play is the saxophone. Associated with all things cool, the sax is a prominent instrument in jazz, rock, pop and, to a lesser degree, classical music. The basic saxophone family is made up of four standard instruments – soprano, alto, tenor and baritone. Other saxes include the sopranino and bass saxophone. When learning to play, it is best to start with either the alto or tenor.
The instrument is made from brass and has a mouthpiece with a single reed, like the clarinet. The saxophone bridges both woodwind and brass families but it is classed as a woodwind instrument owing to the production of its sound by a reed. The saxophone’s dynamic range is the largest of all the woodwinds. It can be played softly with lyricism or loudly with a raw, edgy delivery.
