For anyone interested in learning more about the flute here are a few facts and recordings `which give a glimpse into the possibilities this instrument provides.
The flute is the oldest member of the woodwind family and has, over the centuries, developed from a simple tube with 6 tone holes to the wonderfully sophisticated instrument it is today. Throughout history, flutes have been made out of bone, ivory, wood, jade, glass, plastic, brass, nickel, silver, gold and even platinum. The most common and affordable flutes are made from metal. The sound is created by blowing air across the hole in the head joint. Often, first lessons will entail producing a sound from the head joint. If you are familiar with the recorder, flute fingerings will feel very familiar. The flute family has an array of different sized instruments which all produce their own unique sounds. The highest and smallest is the piccolo. This tiny instrument is commonly used in flute bands, concert bands and symphony orchestras. The deepest and largest is the contrabass flute. This is the rarest member of the flute family and sounds two octaves below a regular flute.
Flute and piccolo lessons are available at Accent Music Studios for students from all over the lower mainland. Currently we provide music lessons to students from North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, Coquitlam, Vancouver and Richmond.
